Review for Essential Apothecary
Five Stars*****
by Jordan N.
This is a great casual Native American herbal store, tea place and eclectic vegetarian restaurant. This place truly believes that herbs has the power to affect your life. This is a kind of business you would expect a Miccosukee man would set up. The Miccosukee tribe and the Seminoles tribe, are the Native American tribes that can be found near Miami and the Everglades. Come to think of it, head a bit farther west on SW 8th Street, and you'll reach the Miccosukee casino and reservation! For more information, check http://www.miccosukee.com .
But anyways, onto the magic power of herbs!
Lavender, which is supposed to be a stress reducer, is used in cookies and pizzas (check the lavender pizza out on Wednesdays)! I was fortunate enough to try the lavender cookie and it was delicious. Things are homemade here and they pride in making sure that they've done things right.
This place is also an excellent place to try fresh herbal teas. They have made unique blends that works out fantastically. I've tried the Energy Alert tea blend which consists of rosemary, basil, lavender, spearmint and peppermint. It was refreshing, especially with a dollop of honey.
Just ask one of the people working here what it would take to remedy what ails you, and they'll bring up several recommendations. DISCLAIMER: THIS IS NOT A HOSPITAL! They'll probably refer you to one if you really need a hospital. :-)
They also have Native American products that are said to have medical effects. I doubt you can find marijuana here if that's what you're thinking, but rest assured, this is a hippie-proud place to chill and hang out, and this can be hard to find outside of California.
Ambiance is cozy and comfy. It is impossible to not feel welcomed here.
Oh, and prices? Really affordable! A cup of tea is two dollars. One lavender cookie cost me 1 dollar. The prices are online though, so you can get an idea of how much things cost.
My favorite thing here to eat is definitely the homemade humus platter!
Note: The Essential Apothecary store front closes in November of 2009. But we still have the Shaman Lounge!
